BBC chair vows to stay to 'fix' problems
9+ hour, 3+ min ago (1195+ words) The chairman of the BBC has said he is "not someone who walks away" after criticism of his handling of the recent crisis over Panorama's edit of a Donald Trump speech. Speaking to a committee of MPs, Samir Shah apologised for "the mistakes that have been made and the impact that has had", but said he intends to "fix it". The controversy arose after the publication of an internal memo by former editorial adviser Michael Prescott, who told the MPs that "systemic problems" in BBC News were getting worse, but that he didn't think the corporation was institutionally biased. The parliamentary committee also heard from BBC board member Sir Robbie Gibb, who dismissed claims of a politically-motivated "coup" at the top of the corporation as "ridiculous". The outcry over the Prescott memo led to the resignations of director general Tim…...

Stemming the tide in Normandy Available for over a year Coastal erosion has become a serious problem for many seaside communities, no more so than in Normandy, in north-west France, where rising sea levels, strong tides and stronger storms have swept away homes, sand dunes and beaches. Every year the sea here is reclaiming several metres of coastline. But there are arguments over what to do about it. In the area around Coutainville beachfront homeowners, oyster producers and campsites are confronting local and national authority plans for some of them to move and to allow nature to take its course. Some locals, suspicious of outside influence, argue this…...

BBC may not be in 'safe hands' under its chair, says committee head

Shah appeared in front of the Commons committee after a turbulent period for the BBC, which has seen its director general and head of news resign after claims of impartiality in its reporting. Speaking to the BBC's World Tonight after the hearing, Dame Caroline Dinenage, the most senior MP on the committee, said she was concerned about a lack of "grip at the heart of BBC governance". Shah told the Commons committee he would not walk away from the job, saying he would "steady the ship" and "fix it". 5 key moments after MPs quiz top BBC figures
14+ hour, 56+ min ago (1006+ words) Five senior BBC figures, including its chairman, faced questions from MPs for more than three hours after a leaked memo raised claims of bias at the corporation. It comes after BBC director general Tim Davie and BBC News chief Deborah Turness resigned earlier this month over a Panorama episode that edited together parts of a 2021 speech by US President Donald Trump. That edit was highlighted in the memo, which was leaked and published by the Daily Telegraph. The memo's author Michael Prescott was among those facing MPs' questions on Monday. Prescott appeared alongside Caroline Daniel, his fellow former external editorial adviser to the BBC, at the Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) committee. BBC chairman Samir Shah and fellow board members Sir Robbie Gibb and Caroline Thomson also appeared. Prescott, a former Sunday Times political editor, was clear when asked if…...
Analysis: BBC chairman survives MP questions – but crisis not over
9+ hour, 16+ min ago (1053+ words) If you tuned into the Culture, Media and Sport committee hearing on Monday expecting a gladiatorial showdown, you'd have been left wondering where the swords were. There have certainly been occasions when Select Committee hearings have felt worthy of Rome's Colosseum, with MPs grand-standing and landing blows. After two turbulent weeks of a BBC crisis, with the pressure on him, Samir Shah looked nervous as he began his session in front of MPs. But within 10 minutes or so, the chairman appeared to relax. That may have been the moment when he realised these MPs had not come equipped for mortal combat. There were to be no killer blows. The key thing for Shah and the BBC was for him to demonstrate that he's got a grip on the corporation. He was asked twice if he should have resigned. He said…...
