Next stop: Green Line impacts in December

23+ hour, 23+ min ago (445+ words) Many T riders who rely on the Green Line will have to use other transit options to get around the city for a few weeks this December. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is suspending service from North Station to Babcock Street (B branch), Kenmore (C and D branch), and Heath Street (E branch) for 15 days, starting Dec. 8 until Dec. 22. The planned suspension will allow the MBTA to replace a wooden overhead trough that houses wiring and is original to the tunnel, constructed in the 1880s, the agency said. The agency also plans to use the closure to perform other improvements, including modernizing signals, inspecting tunnels, and brightening stations, as well as continuing to work on the Green Line Train Protection System, which is meant to prevent head-on collisions between cars on the tracks. Since the installation of Phillip Eng as CEO…...

Lucas: Wu nails the chainsaw op

23+ hour, 53+ min ago (545+ words) Michelle Wu scored big. In broad daylight and in front of everyone, Wu, holding a chain saw, just "stole" Canada away from Gov. Maura Healey. At least she did so in the public relations sense. While Healey, 54, was bogged down over issues like Canadian energy, trade, tourism and tariffs, as well as meetings with Canadian premiers, Wu, 40, was in Nova Scotia felling a huge Christmas tree. The contrast was striking. There Wu was in Halifax last week, just days after an unchallenged reelection, sporting an orange hard hat, dressed in orange colored lumberjack'or "lumberjane'gear, preparing to knock down a 45-foot white spruce Christmas tree that was headed for the Boston Common. It was a media event that politicians dream of having. She did so because she made it look so natural, just as she did in making friends, visiting a…...

11+ hour, 43+ min ago (489+ words) A convicted murderer who slayed a cabbie inside his taxi " a killing that "shocked" the community " is being freed by the state's parole board. Allen Alston, formerly known as Allen Scoggins, has been granted parole less than three decades after he shot and killed 56-year-old man Ismael Rivera. "This man (Alston) snatched my husband away like that," Rivera's widow, Claire, told the Herald when Alston was arrested in 1997. "My husband loved life, and they took it away from him before he had a chance to live it all out," Claire added. Alston was 19 years old when he got into Rivera's taxi in Brockton shortly after 1 a.m. on May 16, 1997. The killer was seen getting into the cab on Wyman Street and then five minutes later, Rivera's taxi rolled onto a lawn with its lights on and engine running. Alston got out of…...
