9+ hour, 23+ min ago (427+ words) SCOTTISH salmon" has won protected status across the European Union. The new designation replaces the older protected geographical indication (PGI) of Scottish farmed salmon". It means that only salmon raised in the coastal region of mainland Scotland, Western Isles, Orkney, and Shetland Isles, can be sold as Scottish salmon" in the EU. Industry body Salmon Scotland said the change would have no impact on wild Scottish salmon as it is no longer commercially available for consumption. The industry body further welcomed the change, saying it would help to protect Scottish products for sale across the European bloc. France is the biggest single international market for Scottish salmon, accounting for 45% of all exports in the year ending June 2025. However, total EU sales dipped by 7% to "423m over the same time period, while non-EU exports surged 106% to "518m. To counter the EU slowdown, the…...
Why Scotland's World Cup qualification deserved to be a top news story on BBC
12+ hour, 16+ min ago (519+ words) Welcome to this week's Media Watch! Typically, this newsletter goes pretty hard on mainstream media when it comes to coverage of Scotland and Scottish issues. However, today I'm going to launch a bit of a defence of the BBC after it faced criticism from English viewers about the amount of airtime given to Scotland's victory over Denmark last week, which sent Scotland to their first World Cup in almost 30 years. The BBC's Newswatch programme on Saturday featured a segment on England fans taking issue with the fact the win was covered as the top item on the News at Ten immediately after the victory and the next morning. Viewer Gill Trbovic'complained: "People have been killed, there are wars going on in the world, and we feel we need to highlight football as the number one item." It's a completely valid…...

Changes to church chapel will 'protect its longevity' amid ageing congregation
20+ hour, 28+ min ago (497+ words) A new disabled toilet and brew room will be added to an Ainsworth church to help protect its "longevity" amid an ageing congregation. Bury Council has approved plans for Ainsworth Unitarian Chapel, on Knowsley Road, which will see the ambulant toilet and brew room created inside the 18th-century church. A new opening light will also be installed, and the toilet and brew room will be separated via a stud wall. The church itself dates back to 1715 and was amended in 1773 and again in 1845. Listed building consent has been approved for the works, with the improvements focusing on the sections of the listed church which date back to 1773. In its application, the church said the extra facilities are an "important addition to a building that is struggling to stay in active use". The church added: "There will be no impact on…...
Glasgow pizza shop appears to have closed suddenly after 36 years of serving locals
15+ hour, 46+ min ago (306+ words) A long-established Glasgow pizza shop appears to have closed after 36 years, with online listings suggesting the Southside business has quietly ceased trading. Armando's Pizza first opened its doors in 1989, and while no formal announcement has been issued by its owners, Google has now updated the venue's profile to display a prominent "Permanently Closed" notice. Yell has made a similar change, with the takeaway also marked as closed on the directory's business listing. The premises, located at Merryvale Place in Giffnock, have been shut for several weeks, including across weekends - traditionally the shop's busiest and most visible trading periods. While technically located within the East Renfrewshire council area, the business often refers to itself as operating in Glasgow's Southside/Greater Glasgow. Further evidence of a suggested closure emerged when the property was recently advertised on commercial letting sites as a hot-food…...

The trials are usually pre-recorded, and Gillian had been picked on by the public to do quite a few of them. By that point in the series, this would have been her seventh trial in a row. When it was revealed by Ant and Dec that she was selected for yet another one, she stood up quite gingerly beside them. A few seconds later, she then fainted, prompting medical personnel to come and give her oxygen before the show cut to a break. Former Olympic gold medallist Linford Christie stepped in to replace her. This caused some debate among fans on whether Gillian faked fainting or if it was real, but the…...
