New owner to open Mississippi barn where Emmett Till was killed as a memorial site

6+ hour, 3+ min ago (434+ words) The barn in Mississippi where 14-year-old Emmett Till was tortured and killed will open to the public as a "sacred" memorial site by 2030, the new owner announced. The Emmett Till Interpretive Center disclosed late Sunday that it had purchased the barn located in a rural area outside the city of Drew, aided by a $1.5 million donation from television producer and writer Shonda Rhimes. "We think that where the worst harms have happened, the most healing is possible," ETIC Executive Director Patrick Weems said. The center plans to open the barn as a memorial ahead of the 75th anniversary of Till's lynching in 1955. Two white men publicly confessed to the killing after being acquitted by an all-white jury in Mississippi later that year, but a Justice Department report released in 2021 said at least one more, unnamed person was involved in Till's abduction....

BBC leaders grilled by lawmakers over its standards after Trump threatened to sue

15+ hour, 23+ min ago (556+ words) Senior BBC leaders were quizzed by Parliament's Culture, Media and Sport Committee amid a major crisis at the publicly funded corporation after its director general and head of news both quit earlier this month and Trump threatened to file a billion-dollar lawsuit. Chairman Samir Shah said the broadcaster should not have waited days before responding to allegations of biased reporting over a documentary on Trump it aired days before the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The third-party production company that made the film " titled "Trump: A Second Chance?" " spliced together three quotes from a speech Trump gave on Jan. 6, 2021, into what appeared to be one quote in which Trump urged supporters to march with him and "fight like hell." The editing made it look like Trump was directly encouraging his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol as Congress was poised to certify President-elect Joe…...

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a rare Superman comic book! And it fetched $9.12M!

7+ hour, 13+ min ago (420+ words) A copy of the first Superman issue, unearthed by three brothers cleaning out their late mother's attic, netted $9.12 million this month at a Texas auction house which says it is the most expensive comic book ever sold. The brothers discovered the comic book in a cardboard box beneath layers of brittle newspapers, dust and cobwebs in their deceased mother's San Francisco home last year, alongside a handful of other rare comics that she and her sibling had collected on the cusp of World War II. "It was just in an attic, sitting in a box, could have easily been thrown away, could've easily been destroyed in a thousand different ways," Allen said. "A lot of people got excited because it's just every factor in collecting that you could possibly want all rolled into one." The "Superman No. 1" comic, released in 1939 by…...

Feast of Giving organizers preparing 7,000 Thanksgiving Day meals

20+ hour, 31+ min ago (1132+ words) The rise of food insecurity throughout the nation " and particularly in the Dayton region " has brought renewed purpose to the Feast of Giving, returning Thanksgiving Day for the first time in five years. It hasn't happened since the COVID-19 pandemic shut things down. Thursday's free event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dayton Convention Center, 22 E. Fifth St., with hundreds of volunteers serving the community in all capacities from food to hospitality to entertainment. Organizers rapidly pivoted when considering hardships stemming from recent cuts to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) due to the longest government shutdown in American history. Defining current events as "clearly a perfect storm," Paris recognized the value of the Feast of Giving being a beacon of empathy and inclusion. This year's event is being led by local leaders Jason Woodard and Shane Connor, handpicked by longtime…...

Name, Image and Likeness proposal approved by OHSAA schools

14+ hour, 48+ min ago (378+ words) Name, Image and Likeness has arrived for Ohio high school athletes. Ohio High School Athletic Association member schools officially approved NIL language proposed by the organization. The schools voted 447 in favor to 121 against during the Nov. 17-21 voting period. 247 schools abstained. The OHSAA said in a statement it believes that the adoption of this new bylaw will help ensure a stable and secure framework for NIL and Personal Branding Rights at the high school level in Ohio moving forward. Ohio becomes the 45th state to allow NIL. The OHSAA has stated plans previously called for the referendum to be voted on during its May 2026 voting period. Forcing the issue now is a lawsuit filed Oct. 15 against the OHSAA by the family of Jamier Brown, a junior who plays football at Wayne High School and reportedly missed out on deals, such as trading…...

AP and Trump administration argue access case before federal appeals court; no ruling yet

15+ hour, 33+ min ago (745+ words) Trump restricted the AP's access to events in smaller spaces like the Oval Office and Air Force One, leading the news outlet to sue. A lower federal court ruled that President Donald Trump improperly retaliated against the outlet because it did not follow and refer to the body of water as the Gulf of America. The U.S. District Court of Appeals in Washington prevented the ruling from taking effect " effectively leaving it up to the White House to determine the AP's access " and a three-judge panel from that court heard arguments Monday on an appeal of the lower court's ruling. No immediate ruling was issued. The administration says it is up the White House to determine the makeup of "pools" that cover the president in places where space is limited. And he can reward or punish reporters with access in these…...

Thousands of Thanksgiving meals to be given away by Miami Valley Meals

19+ hour, 59+ min ago (391+ words) Miami Valley Meals" Turkey Takeaway is returning for its sixth year on Wednesday when volunteers will hand out thousands of pre-made, frozen meals for families in need of a little extra help this Thanksgiving. Miami Valley Meals already increased its regular operations to keep up with demand and the uncertainty around the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the recently ended government shutdown. "When we saw that the SNAP delays and cuts were happening in late October, we proactively decided to make 10% more meals than we already did," said Amanda DeLotelle, executive director, Miami Valley Meals. The Turkey Takeaway is an extra event on top of Miami Valley Meals" regular operations, and it started in 2020, DeLotelle said, after the Feast of Giving was canceled due to the pandemic. "Back in 2020, we said, "Hey, we can do something. It won"t…...

Bowling: Kenton Ridge bowler sets Clark County record

20+ hour, 13+ min ago (441+ words) Strike after strike " 22 in a row " and Cooper Stacy was just getting started. The Kenton Ridge High School senior recently posted a 300-289-266 " 855 in youth league play at Victory Lanes. It was not only a personal best for the 18-year-old, but a Clark County youth record for high series. The previous record of 824 was set by Trey Cooper in 2012. "I was throwing the ball good, everything felt right, and I got a few lucky breaks," Stacy said. "After the first two games, I just wanted to keep on pace for an 800." It wasn't a fluke for the Cougars varsity bowler as he rolled an 811 one week earlier. And the perfect game was his second as he posted a 300 game during a high school match last season. Stacy came to the game a bit later than some youth bowlers, giving it a…...

MrBeast and the Rockefeller Foundation team up to spark youth philanthropy and fight child labor

15+ hour, 3+ min ago (671+ words) Beast Philanthropy, the charitable organization started by MrBeast founder Jimmy Donaldson, and the Rockefeller Foundation announced a strategic partnership Monday. The idea is to pair Donaldson's unique ability to capture youth attention spans with the foundation's 112-year history of using its resources and technology to tackle global problems. Speaking together ahead of a Nov. 21 video shoot at MrBeast's Greenville, North Carolina, studio, the partners complimented the respective strengths they hope to exchange with each other. "I just want to download their brains into our team's brains," he added. Dr. Rajiv Shah, the president of the Rockefeller Foundation, said the philanthropic sector has long failed to capture "the hearts and minds of hundreds of millions of young people." He said MrBeast can help them engage young people, inspire hope and communicate their work more accessibly. Most people have a natural desire…...
