Californians are flocking to this Arizona city
16+ hour, 46+ min ago (659+ words) The great California exodus has mostly ended, but some Golden State residents have continued to flee the state. Although the primary destination has been Texas, Arizona is not too far behind. As my colleague Terry Castleman wrote, increasing numbers of Californians have in recent years started new lives in Lake Havasu City " an Arizona town known for its spring break recreation. Californians fed up with taxes and expenses in the Golden State may find relief by moving to a place with a lower cost of living. But what does that mean for locals? More Californians have moved to Havasu than people from other parts of Arizona. In 2023, 5,358 Californians moved to Mojave County (home to Havasu) compared with 2,651 Arizonans. The city now has nearly 60,000 residents, and has steadily grown over the last two decades with the help of some eager-to-leave-California Californians....
Commentary: The ex-landscaper behind the deportation diary L.A. never wanted
1+ hour, 16+ min ago (1467+ words) At 8 o'clock on a stormy weeknight in the chilly Chinatown offices of L.A. Taco, Memo Torres finally was worn out. The audio that played from Torres' double-screen computer and smart phone as he reviewed the evidence on the day I visited contained snippets of the Southland's sad soundtrack under what he continually calls the "siege" of ICE. Men pleading to la migra to stop hurting them. Activists cursing out agents. Whistles, screams, honks and sirens. Sobbing family members. One shudders to think what Border Patrol sector chief Gregory Bovino thinks is excessive for la migra. With his powers now radically expanded, we're about to find out. "If I wanted to cry, I don't think that I could," Torres said when I asked how he coped with seeing such videos ad nauseum. He sighed. His deep-set eyes were bleary. Reading glasses did…...

The Midwest city, as many know, is Disney's birthplace, but in 1948 he and Kimball embarked on a vacation to that city's railroad fair. By the time the trip had concluded, Disney's vision of Disneyland had begun to take shape. Within days of returning to Los Angeles, Disney had written a memo capturing his ideas that would ultimately appear in…...

'Dodgers Rule': Graffiti artist Chaka and others draw inspiration — and murals — from World Series champs
19+ hour, 52+ min ago (735+ words) Legendary graffiti artist Daniel "Chaka" Ramos once claimed he had tagged more than 40,000 locations around Los Angeles. He can now add seven more. And unlike decades ago " when Ramos had to sneak around in darkness to spray-paint his nickname in large, block letters all over the city and surrounding areas " this time it was fully permissible. Earlier this month, Nike recruited Ramos to add his signature style to seven murals celebrating the Dodgers" back-to-back World Series titles, which the team clinched Nov. 1 with a dramatic Game 7 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays. Ramos, an L.A. native and Dodgers fan, was more than happy to participate, adding his name and slogans crafted by Nike to each piece. He told The Times in an email that it was his "first major project with a corporate giant like Nike." "They"re one of the…...

Iconic Stahl House, a Midcentury Modern stunner, up for sale
12+ hour, 35+ min ago (582+ words) For decades, the Stahl House in the Hollywood Hills has been a rarity " a globally known icon of Midcentury Modernism and Los Angeles glamour, still in the hands of the family who commissioned it in 1960. But now it's for sale. The asking price is $25 million, which might seem a startling figure for a two-bedroom, 2,300-square-foot home on a snug lot. But that figure might not surprise lovers of modernist architecture who know it as Case Study House #22. The Architect's Newspaper called it "one of the world's most famous buildings." Los Angeles magazine called Shulman's image "perhaps the most famous picture ever taken of Los Angeles." "There are no comps for the Stahl house. It's incomparable," said William Baker, architecture director for the real estate firm the Agency Beverly Hills. The home was included in the company's fall catalog Nov. 12. By…...
