Californians are flocking to this Arizona city

14+ hour, 44+ min ago (659+ words) The great California exodus has mostly ended, but some Golden State residents have continued to flee the state. Although the primary destination has been Texas, Arizona is not too far behind. As my colleague Terry Castleman wrote, increasing numbers of Californians have in recent years started new lives in Lake Havasu City " an Arizona town known for its spring break recreation. Californians fed up with taxes and expenses in the Golden State may find relief by moving to a place with a lower cost of living. But what does that mean for locals? More Californians have moved to Havasu than people from other parts of Arizona. In 2023, 5,358 Californians moved to Mojave County (home to Havasu) compared with 2,651 Arizonans. The city now has nearly 60,000 residents, and has steadily grown over the last two decades with the help of some eager-to-leave-California Californians....

Think you know Disneyland history? New exhibit unveils rarely seen concept art

18+ hour, 14+ min ago (587+ words) Walt Disney Co. likes to resurrect a famous Walt Disney quote saying that the empire was "started by a mouse." But when it comes to Disneyland, its theme park that become a SoCal institution, fans and history buffs crave specifics. A new exhibit at San Francisco's Walt Disney Family Museum aims to chart the beginnings and early evolution of the Anaheim resort, and it begins with a trip Disney took with friend, animator and fellow train aficionado Ward Kimball to Chicago. The Midwest city, as many know, is Disney's birthplace, but in 1948 he and Kimball embarked on a vacation to that city's railroad fair. By the time the trip had concluded, Disney's vision of Disneyland had begun to take shape. Within days of returning to Los Angeles, Disney had written a memo capturing his ideas that would ultimately appear in…...

'An American nightmare': L.A. hosts first congressional hearing on impact of immigration raids

7+ hour, 57+ min ago (625+ words) There was the U.S. citizen who said she no longer feels safe after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer slammed her to the ground in downtown Los Angeles and later accused her of assault " a case prosecutors dismissed soon after. The Long Beach mayor, who said immigration agents have seized more than 50 residents off the city's streets " including 11 in a single afternoon last Thursday, among them a gardener tackled inside Polly's Pies restaurant. A Boyle Heights pastor who told of a mother who lost her young daughter after a failed organ transplant and was paralyzed over whether to cremate her or bury her, as she wanted, because she feared being deported and unable to visit her child's grave. During a congressional oversight hearing Monday in L.A., more than a dozen elected officials, experts and community members laid bare the impact of the…...

'Dodgers Rule': Graffiti artist Chaka and others draw inspiration — and murals — from World Series champs

17+ hour, 50+ min ago (735+ words) Legendary graffiti artist Daniel "Chaka" Ramos once claimed he had tagged more than 40,000 locations around Los Angeles. He can now add seven more. And unlike decades ago " when Ramos had to sneak around in darkness to spray-paint his nickname in large, block letters all over the city and surrounding areas " this time it was fully permissible. Earlier this month, Nike recruited Ramos to add his signature style to seven murals celebrating the Dodgers" back-to-back World Series titles, which the team clinched Nov. 1 with a dramatic Game 7 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays. Ramos, an L.A. native and Dodgers fan, was more than happy to participate, adding his name and slogans crafted by Nike to each piece. He told The Times in an email that it was his "first major project with a corporate giant like Nike." "They"re one of the…...

Another rally for Alphabet leads the U.S. stock market higher

6+ hour, 44+ min ago (645+ words) NEW YORK'The U.S. stock market rallied on Monday, at the start of a week with shortened trading because of the Thanksgiving holiday. The Standard & Poor's 500 climbed 1.5% for one of its best days since the summer and added to its jump from Friday, finding some strength following a shaky few weeks. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 202 points, or 0.4%, and the Nasdaq composite jumped 2.7%. Stocks got a lift from rising hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut its main interest rate again at its next meeting in December, a move that could boost the economy and investment prices. The market also benefited from strength for stocks caught up in the artificial-intelligence frenzy. Alphabet, which has been getting praise for its newest Gemini AI model, rallied 6.3% and was one of the strongest forces lifting the S&P 500. Nvidia rose 2.1%. Monday's gains followed sharp…...

Australian judge rules synagogue arsonist was motivated by mental illness, not antisemitism

14+ hour, 11+ min ago (494+ words) MELBOURNE, Australia'A man who set fire to a Melbourne synagogue while worshippers were inside was motivated by mental illness rather than antisemitism, an Australian magistrate said on Monday. Angelo Loras, 35, had pleaded guilty to arson and recklessly placing people at risk of death on July 4 when he doused the front door of the East Melbourne Synagogue with flammable liquid and ignited it. Around 20 worshippers were inside sharing a Shabbat meal, but no one was injured. Reports of antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents have risen sharply across Australia since the war between Israel and Hamas began in 2023. Government leaders suspected the attack on the synagogue, which is also known as the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, was a hate crime. The morning after the fire, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese released a statement saying the arson attack was "cowardly, is an act of violence…...

Iconic Stahl House, a Midcentury Modern stunner, up for sale

10+ hour, 33+ min ago (582+ words) For decades, the Stahl House in the Hollywood Hills has been a rarity " a globally known icon of Midcentury Modernism and Los Angeles glamour, still in the hands of the family who commissioned it in 1960. But now it's for sale. The asking price is $25 million, which might seem a startling figure for a two-bedroom, 2,300-square-foot home on a snug lot. But that figure might not surprise lovers of modernist architecture who know it as Case Study House #22. The Architect's Newspaper called it "one of the world's most famous buildings." Los Angeles magazine called Shulman's image "perhaps the most famous picture ever taken of Los Angeles." "There are no comps for the Stahl house. It's incomparable," said William Baker, architecture director for the real estate firm the Agency Beverly Hills. The home was included in the company's fall catalog Nov. 12. By…...

Daughter of ex-South African leader Zuma is accused of luring men to fight in Russia-Ukraine war

11+ hour, 47+ min ago (450+ words) JOHANNESBURG'South African police say they are investigating allegations that former President Jacob Zuma "s daughter Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla lured 17 men who are now trapped in Russia into fighting in that country's war with Ukraine without their consent. According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, an affidavit filed by Zuma-Sambudla's sister Nkosazana Bonganini Zuma-Mncube alleges that Zuma-Sambudla and two other people lured the men by claiming they would receive security training in Russia. Details about the two others were not immediately clear. The affidavit alleges they were handed over to a Russian mercenary group and forced to fight in the war. It also says eight of the 17 men were members of the sisters' family. Mathe said Sunday that any police charges "are still to be determined through a thorough investigation." South Africa's foreign minister, Ronald Lamola, told reporters on the sidelines of the…...
